大多數的蟋蟀的體型中等，很會跳躍，顏色為黃褐色或黑褐色。
蟋蟀是夜間活動型的昆蟲。蟋蟀一邊的翅膀的『拔』摩擦著另一邊翅膀上的列齒，便會發出聲音。
 
只有雄蟋蟀會發出聲音來吸引雌蟋蟀。
 
蟋蟀會發出四種不同的聲調：低柔的求愛曲、響亮的吸引雌性曲、積極的戰鬥曲及成功交配後的交配曲。
 
Crickets are medium sized,jumping insects. They are usually brown or dark brown.
 
They are nocturnal insects. They make a chirping noise by rubbing together the wings as they lie folded one wing upon the other.
 
Only the male makes chirping sounds to attract the female.
 
A chirping cricket can issue sounds in four different tones: a light soft courtship sound, a loud sound to attract the female, an aggressive fighting sound and a copulatory sound after successful mating.
